Devlog 5: Models

Devlog 5: Models and In-Game Objects

At the very start of the creation of FULL TILT, most world objects and models were place holder objects. Platforms, grapplables and even the grappling hook were all default 3D objects like cubes or spheres. Throughout the development of FULL TILT these objects have been changed and totally remade in many cases to better suit the style and aesthetic of the game as well as the enjoyability and playability.

Many techniques were used in the creation of these models and can be attributed to the 207 tutorials when they taught us some basic modelling. Past experience is also what has allowed us to make some awesome models and make our game look the way it does.

Grappling Gun:

To begin with, we initially created a basic grappling gun to use as a place holder.

This was later remade and now looks like this:

These changes make the style and aesthetics much better and allows the player to enjoy it more.

We also implemented some movement within the grappling gun to help it stand out. It provides some feedback to the player while they are playing and are using the grappling gun. This physical changing of the model is just another thing that increases the enjoyability of FULL TILT.

Grappling Hook:

To begin with, the actual hook the grappling gun shoots was originally just a default cube. This was later revamped to fit the style of the gun. As showed in this previous devlog the link between the hook and the gun really brings the two models together and allow them to function in a way the user understands.

Level Design, Platforms and Grapplables:

Many of the platforms and grapplables to begin with were also very basic objects. These were either default objects or very simplistic objects created with pro builder.

With the use of blender and probuilder, we were able to totally change the levels and remake most of the platforms. This meant better visuals and made the game much more playable and fun.

As you can see the changes made over time drastically improve how the game looks and also how it feels whilst being played. Improvements like this is what is going to continually make this game better and look more appealing.
